New Vortex System Liquid Flow Meter Promises Users "Triple Whammy" Of Benefits

 

A new, CE-marked liquid flow meter using the Karman's vortex principle has been released by STEC, the world leader in mass flow controllers.

The LK series units feature a robust PFA construction that eliminates moving parts and enables the user to measure and monitor the flow of even corrosive chemicals.

The devices are designed for use in flow rate monitoring of pure water in wet stations for semiconductor and liquid crystal display production as well as measurement and monitoring of chemicals in various liquid flows.

Stuart Knight, STEC's European sales manager, claimed the product offered users a "triple whammy" of benefits.

"Because there are no moving parts there is no dead space, no particles generated and it's extraordinarily reliable. It's made of PFA, so has a high chemical resistance capable of handling even corrosive chemicals and the measurement method is not affected by temperature or pressure," he said.

Outlining the technology, he explained: "Most flow meters use a rotating impeller but in this device liquid passes over a pin-like obstruction that creates a vortex. Since the frequency of the vortex is linearly proportional to the flow velocity, the vortex can be measured and flow rates from 2.5l/min to 90l/min reported to within ±2% F.S. accuracy. "

He said the product provided ultra-clean performance and predicted it would be widely specified in both the semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors.

Mr Knight said the ultra-clean performance was achieved because no moving parts meant no particles were generated while no dead space and high surface finish within the instrument prevented bacterial growth.

He said the product had been designed to minimize pressure loss with a simple structure to ensure high reliability and long service life.

Compact in size at 77 mm high, 48 mm wide and 100 mm long in a finallock or tube fitting type connection (rising to 230mm long in a tube type connection), the lightweight device has a variety of useful functions. These include an adjustable display allowing for mounting in any orientation, display mode setting for either momentary flow rate or integrated flow rate and an alarm output.
